Hang a mirror without drilling

Updated

tesa gives its Powerbond Mirror tape a size limit, not a weight rating, and says a mirror is better on it than on Powerstrips. The tape is permanent and not recommended for plastered or wallpapered walls.

Depends on the maker This maker's figure for this product only. Other makers' figures may differ.

Can you hang a mirror with adhesive strips?

Not on tesa's strips: tesa, which makes both, says a mirror is better on its mirror tape. Asked Can I hang up a mirror by using tesa Powerstrips®?, it says It would be better to use tesa Powerbond® Mirror which has been specifically designed for hanging mirrors.

So for a mirror we follow tesa's own advice and show its mirror tape, which has a size limit rather than a weight figure, and not its strips.

How big a mirror can tesa Powerbond Mirror take?

tesa gives a size, not a weight: Holds mirrors of max. 70 x 70 cm up to 4 mm thickness. With no weight figure, we have nothing to compare your mirror's weight with, so we give no maker rating. The size is the most tesa rates the tape for, not a target.

  • Surfaces tesa lists on the tape's product sheet: Tiles, Most plastics, Glass, Metal, Steel.
  • Not recommended: We don't recommend tesa® Powerbond tapes for plastered or wallpapered walls.
  • Taking it down: Please note that these tapes are meant to be a permanent solution and are therefore not removable without leaving residues.

tesa adds this note to the values on its product sheet:

The values in this section should be considered representative or typical only and should not be used for specification purposes.

Can you stick a mirror to a painted wall?

We can't give an answer for a painted wall yet. tesa says We don't recommend tesa® Powerbond tapes for plastered or wallpapered walls. Painted plaster and painted plasterboard are not among the surfaces it lists, so the checker gives no maker rating for a painted wall.

Renting? Ask your landlord in writing first. To fix it to the wall instead, What's my wall? gives fischer's fixing, drill bit and screw for the wall behind the paint.

Can you use mirror tape in a rented home?

Ask your landlord first, because the tape is meant to stay. tesa says: Please note that these tapes are meant to be a permanent solution and are therefore not removable without leaving residues.

When does a mirror need a wall fixing?

When it is bigger or thicker than tesa's size limit, when your wall is not a surface tesa lists, or when you want to take the mirror down later without residue. A mirror hangs flat against the wall, so a wall fixing's recommended load can be compared with the mirror's weight shared between its fixings.

Setting a metal cavity fixing with a screwdriver, in fischer's words for its HM:

  1. If using a battery operated screwdriver or screwdriver for installation, the pre-assembled screws must be removed first.
  2. When screwing in and expanding the fixing, the attachment, or a max. 6 mm plate, needs to be used as a turning stop.
  3. During installation, the expanding arms swing open and press onto the reverse side of the board.

fischer adds: The claws around the edge of the fixing penetrate the board building material, preventing the fixing from rotating, thus ensuring a secure installation.

fischer's own list of uses for that fixing: The fischer metal cavity fixing HM is suitable for fixing lighting, pictures and light shelves indoors. It does not name mirrors.

Questions

Can I use mirror tape in a bathroom?

Yes, on the surfaces tesa lists for it: Tiles, Most plastics, Glass, Metal, Steel. tesa calls the tape a quick and convenient and reliable way to permanently mount mirrors and other flat objects in humid areas such as bathrooms, but says We don't recommend tesa® Powerbond tapes for plastered or wallpapered walls. A painted bathroom wall is not on tesa's list either, so see Can you stick a mirror to a painted wall?.

Which wall fixing does a mirror need?

It depends on the wall behind it. B&Q says If you're drilling into a plasterboard wall, a multi-surface drill bit is recommended. For brick walls, always use a masonry drill bit. What's my wall? gives the fixing, drill bit and screw for yours, with fischer's recommended load for one fixing.
