Which one?
A TV floor stand or a wall mount?
Updated
A floor stand needs no drilling. A wall mount needs the right fixing for your wall and, if you rent, your landlord's permission.
A floor stand
- Where it goes
- On the floor. Vogel's, which makes floor stands and wall mounts, says:
A TV floor stand allows you to place your TV anywhere in your room or even move it to a different room.
- What it needs
- No drill, and a TV that fits the stand: its weight, screen size and VESA hole pattern within the stand maker's own figures.
- How it comes down
- It moves with the TV. Nothing is fixed to the wall, so there are no holes to fill.
- Which maker's figure applies
- The stand maker's own figures for weight and screen size. Our TV guide gives Vogel's for its TVS 3690.

A wall mount
- Where it goes
- On the wall. On plasterboard it goes on the studs behind the board, and Vogel's starts with the wall:
The first step is checking the framework of your plasterboard wall.
Its pages differ on when its stud adapter is needed, and our TV guide gives both. - What it needs
- A drill, the fixing your mount's instructions call for, and a check for cables and pipes first. Vogel's says the mount and the TV must agree:
TV size or inch size, weight and VESA hole pattern must all match
- How it comes down
- Unscrewed, and the holes stay. Shelter lists
holes in walls or doors
among the things a deposit can be charged for in England. - Which maker's figure applies
- The mount maker's own maximum. For a solid wall, What's my wall? gives fischer's recommended load for one fixing, and the lower of the two applies. A mount sticks out from the wall, so we do not compare your TV with a figure per fixing.
